‘After Images’ is an evocation of classic paintings by Picasso, Modigliani, Schiele, and Ingres to which Arbus brings her own style and originality. “In emulating these paintings”, says Arbus,” The challenge for me has been to use much softer lighting than I have in the past and to figure out how to represent the sloped shoulders, elongated necks and fingers that don’t exist in real life. The more I make these images,” she says, “the more involved I become in how they differ from the originals.” The ‘After Images’ series is a discussion of what occurs in the lens between the real, the represented, how we view painting and photography, and how memory influences perception. Arbus has extended photography’s range by making a series of pictures of how we see what it is that we are viewing.

Amy Arbus has published four books (No Place Like Home (1986), The Inconvenience of Being Born (1994), On The Street: 1980 – 1990 (2006), and The Fourth Wall (2008), and her work has been featured in over one hundred periodicals around the world, including New York Magazine, People, Rolling Stone, and The New York Times Magazine. Her photographs are part of the permanent collections of The New York Public Library and the Museum of Modern Art in New York City. She has had 21 solo exhibitions worldwide.

The Schoolhouse Gallery specializes in modern and contemporary painting, photography, and printmaking. Since 1998 they have presented their artists in their Provincetown gallery space and at a variety of fairs and outside exhibition projects. They represent a roster of over 50 artists from the Outer Cape and throughout the US and Europe while maintaining a large inventory of related works. Director/ Owner Mike Carroll also conducts individual artist’s studio visits with clients.

Craig Blacklock’s large format photographs capture the space and beauty of the Lake Superior region’s environment. Blacklock has published seventeen books including: The Lake Superior Images; Minnesota’s North Shore; and A Voice Within: The Lake Superior Nudes. Also, Blacklock is a conservationist, co-founding the Blacklock Nature Sanctuary, and helping establish the Lake Superior Water Trail of Minnesota. Currently, Blacklock is a Senior Fellow at the University of Minnesota’s Center for Spirituality and Healing. This exhibition is courtesy of the artist and is sponsored by SEMAC (Southeastern Minnesota Arts council) and the media Sponsor is Wisconsin Public Radio.

There will be an exhibition reception and book signing: Thursday, July 12th from 5-7 pm as well as a lecture and workshop with Craig Blacklock Thursday, July 12, 12:30 – 4:30 pm and Friday, July 13, 5:15 – 9:30 am. This lecture and workshop is for experienced photographers who are interested in taking their digital images to a higher level. The focus for this workshop will be the beautiful wildflowers in the prairie gardens at the MMAM. The workshop will begin with a half day of lecture and instruction on Thursday, and finish with an early morning shoot on Friday. Photographers should bring their digital SLR cameras with a few lens options, a tripod, and a diffusion tent. Instructions to create a diffusion tent will be mailed to participants upon registration. Cost: $200* Call Heather at (507) 474-6626 to register.

The Minnesota Marine Art Museum opened July 27, 2006 featuring three major art collections, making it a regional and national attraction. On loan to the Museum, the Burrichter/Kierlin Marine Art Collection features oil paintings, watercolors and three-dimensional objects from a variety of countries and periods which were created by many of the world’s most important marine artists. The Leo Smith Folk Art Collection consists of distinctive wood carved and hand painted sculptures that capture the spirit of small town river life. These whimsical, colorful sculptures represent and celebrate the flora, fauna and folklore of the upper Mississippi River region. Finally, the Museum’s permanent collection features historic marine art, artifacts and objects ranging from items such as personal letters from Lord Admiral Horatio Nelson to his wife to large stained glass window displayed in the Museum’s atrium.

On May 1, 2009 the museum opened a new expansion gallery and educational room. The new gallery features Impressionism and Hudson River school works from Renoir, Monet, Pissarro, Homer, Sisley, Cole, Bierstadt, Buttersworth, Silva, and includes one of Vincent van Gogh’s first oil paintings.

“The objects I choose are ordinary, out of use, out-dated remnants of our culture. I like to think of them as archaeological finds. Their oddness is meant to create a sense of confusion or question. A person finding a never-before-seen object on an archaeological dig might feel that same sensation. Each object is presented straight on, forcing the viewer to consider it alone. Isolated in the painting, the objects have no other reference but themselves. And yet they can conjure up references beyond their own experience. They invite flights of fantasy, stories designed by the individual viewer. These stories are the biographies that I try to elicit from the viewer, hoping they gain a new insight about what an object is, or how it can been seen.”

ABOUT THE ARTIST

Michael Beck has led a very interesting life. He he was born in 1943, spent some time in the Bay area in 1960’s living with the Beatniks in North Beach and the Hippies in the Haight. He received an MFA in painting with high distinction from California College of Arts and Crafts in the 1984. He is currently represented by the  Lora Schlesinger Gallery in Santa Monica and Paul Thiebaud Gallery in San Francisco. As a manufacturer we get many requests out of the ordinary. We try and do as many as possible and when we see exhibition shots like this it makes it all worthwhile.

In addition we had to make a strainer to add support to the back of the frame as well as make a crate and ship it over night. Naturally, we like to have more time on projects like this.

"Central to the installation is a three-channel video projection, titled Within a Stone’s Throw, which explores the rich landscape of Ireland’s Burren coastline. In 2010, Condit received a grant from the Lighton International Artists Exchange Program that allowed her to spend five weeks at the Burren College of Art in northwest County Clare, Ireland. Once dominated by dense oak forests, the Burren region—from the Gaelic boíreann, meaning rocky place—shows the effects of continuous settlement dating back to the Neolithic period. Ancient farmers cleared trees to make way for cattle and sheep farming, and livestock grazing eroded the thin layer of extant topsoil, effectively preventing the growth of future forests. 

Although Condit is best known as a video artist, this exhibition signals her new immersion into the world of still imagery. A series of seven photographs complements Within a Stone’s Throw, each image a complex, digitally constructed composite of Lake Michigan and its environs. These works showcase the sublime beauty of the natural world, at once threatening and delicate, while addressing both the fragility and the timelessness of our planet."

John Rocco is an award winning author and illustrator of children's picture books. The show will include examples of the cover art Rocco created for the bestselling Percy Jackson series and the Kane Chronicles as well as a selection of illustrations from his popular children’s books  Blackout, Moonpowder, Wolf! Wolf! and Fu Finds the Way.

This exhibition is the eighth in the Orlando Museum of Art's (OMA's) Art of the Picture Book Series. The exhibition will feature more than 60 preparatory drawings and finished illustrations by John Rocco, and will be on view through October 28, 2012. Rocco will appear at the OMA’s opening on July 14 at noon for a presentation and book signing.

We first met with the OMA last winter to discuss the frames for this project.  This project had a special interest for us because we had just worked on an exhibit for another celebrated chlldren's picture book illustrator, Ezra Jack Keats, for the Jewish Museum in New York.

In preparation for this post I did some research on John Rocco. He has led a very interesting life working with some of the most creative people in the entertainment industry. The following is an excerpt from his website outlining his interesting career path.

"After high school I studied illustration at the Rhode Island School of Design and School of Visual Arts in New York City. Upon graduating I collaborated with actor/comedian Whoopi Goldberg creating the picture book Alice. 

...Shortly after, I moved to Los Angeles.  At Walt Disney Imagineering I designed many attractions at Disney’s Epcot, including the Spaceship Earth Post-Show and the Mission Space Post-Show. While at WDI I also served as the art director for DisneyQuest, an interactive theme park in Downtown Disney. At Dreamworks, I was the pre-production art director for the top grossing animated film Shrek, where I created hundreds of illustrations that helped the animators create the final look of the film.

…In 2005 I shifted my focus back to children’s books and created Wolf! Wolf! which garnered several awards including Borders Original Voices Award for best picture book. My next book, Moonpowder, was part of the Original Art Show at the Society of Illustrators, and artwork from the book was selected for a special nationwide traveling exhibition. The fall of 2009 marked the release of my latest book, Fu Finds the Way about a boy who finds courage in a pot of tea. I also illustrate all the covers for Rick Riordan’s bestselling YA series, Percy Jackson and the Olympians." 

In 2012 Blackout, which was written and illustrated by Rocco was a Caldecott Honor Book.
