Goldsleger’s works are inspired by relationships between location and territory, between micro detail and macro expanse, and between order and chaos. Using a highly nuanced palette of whites, greys, blacks and muted colors, these new works deconstruct reality into the two-dimensional plane.

Although rooted in reality, these mixed media paintings and drawings are constructed in the negative and developed in layers blurring edges and reconfiguring form. Drawing upon eternal themes, these works suggest a sense of beauty and tragedy.

ABOUT THE ARTIST

Cheryl Goldsleger exhibits in the United States and internationally. Her work has been included in exhibitions at the Corcoran Gallery in Washington, DC, the American Academy in New York, the Albright-Knox Art Gallery in Buffalo, the Brooklyn Museum, the Islip Art Museum, The National Museum of Women in the Arts, the Virginia Museum, the New Orleans Museum, the Israel Museum, and the Tel Aviv Museum.  Her work has been discussed in an extensive list of publications, and her awards include two National Endowment for the Arts Artist Fellowships, a Southeastern Center for Contemporary Art Fellowship, a residency at the La Napoule Foundation in southern France and a US/France exchange fellowship at the Cite Internationale des Arts in Paris.

An extraordinary collection of 830 photographic works spanning from 1844 to 2012, given as a bequest to the Smart Museum of Art at the University of Chicago, forms the basis of  “There was a whole collection made: Photography from Lester and Betty Guttman” exhibition.

There was a whole collection made mines the Estate of Lester and Betty Guttman’s 2014 gift of over eight hundred photographic works by 414 artists to the Smart Museum, essentially establishing a major new resource for the public as well as scholars of the history and theory of photography.

The exhibition draws extensively from the collection, which the Guttmans built over 31 years, and includes rare vintage prints by pioneers of the medium like William Henry Fox Talbot and David Octavius Hill; modernworks by Hannah Höch, Man Ray, László Moholy-Nagy, Brassaï, Berenice Abbott, and Helen Levitt; contemporary classics by Diane Arbus, Malick Sidibé, Chuck Close, and Carrie Mae Weems.

Next summer, the Springfield Museums will open The Amazing World of Dr. Seuss, the first museum to honor Springfield native Theodor Geisel. In anticipation of that momentous occasion, the Michele and Donald D’Amour Museum of Fine Arts will exhibit a series of whimsical works on paper around the common theme of “Cats in Hats,” in honor of Geisel’s most famous work of children’s literature as well as “Turtle Power! Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles and Samurai Heroes”.

“Cats in Hats” will be on view at the Michele and Donald D’Amour Museum of Fine Arts and will feature over 40 original works by members of the Western Massachusetts Illustrators’ Guild. The group includes some of the region’s best-known illustrators, including Diane deGroat, Ruth Sanderson, and Jane Yolen, among others. The artistic styles employed by the group’s members range from children’s books to fantasy art to editorial pieces and beyond, and this diversity of methods and the size of its membership make the group a dynamic and active resource for illustration.

“Turtle Power! Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles and Samurai Heroes”

Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, meet your samurai ancestors! View Elias Derby’s extensive collection of original artwork and memorabilia from the TMNT series alongside centuries-old samurai swords, armor, and pristine Japanese woodblock prints from the collections of the Springfield Museums. Symbols, imagery and artifacts from pop culture will illustrate the connections between the past and the present; the exhibit also features a special “Saturday Morning Cartoon” area for children.
